God Is Always Open for Business

God Is Always Open for Business

Most churches are shuttered for the night all across the world.  Their services are ended.  Their staff of ministers and priests are probably in bed by now.  No human is around to hear prayers of confession, receive tears of sadness, or counsel the confused.

However …

God is awake.

I just wrote that and it stopped me in my tracks.  God IS AWAKE.

That is some of the best writing of my life.  I’m excited about that thought.

And, if your God concept is anything like mine, you also realize that His hand is on the throttle of this world.  He is in charge.

Psalm 121:4 says, “He never slumbers nor sleeps.”

He always watches
Always cares
Always keeps an eye on things
He is Always Open for Business

I Want to be Listening

I Want to be Listening

I have always loved the Bible story of Samuel as a young boy.  He was brought to the Temple as an infant and given to the Priest to live and work and serve the Lord for the rest of his days.

When he was about eight years of age, he heard a voice one night.  “Samuel.  Samuel.”

He rose up from his bed and went to the priest Eli and said, “Surely you called and here I am.”

Eli told him to go back to sleep. He had not called.

Samuel returned to bed and the same thing happened.  He heard his name, arose, presented himself to Eli and Eli again sent him back to bed.

And it happened again.  This time, Eli sensed this might be the voice of God speaking to Samuel and told him to respond, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel did as Eli said, and God laid out His specific message for Samuel.

Note Samuel’s words to God: “Speak, Lord,
for your servant is listening.”

Important words.  They show the marks of a man or woman whose life is turned toward God.

I’ve prayed this prayer many times in my walk with God.  I pray it every time I sit down to write this blog.  I don’t know a lot about my readership except in general what countries they are from.  I do know this post is read, for my numbers on any given day usually make this the most-read blog of the six that I write.

I take this space seriously.  I want to listen for the voice of God so that I can write something that He will use in someone’s life every time I write.

I want to listen.

And if I do my job, people will read, lives will be encouraged, and I do my portion of God’s work in my corner of this world.

It starts with listening.  I want to get really good at that.

Love ~ The Fourth Word of Christmas

Love – The Fourth Word of Christmas

Let’s talk about love – especially love at Christmas.  And the love we will consider is Agape love – the highest form of love.  It speaks of God’s love for man and man’s love for God.

Love, to be experienced, needs someone to receive it.  God placed a special value on mankind.  He made man just a little lower than His angels.  Mankind was formed in the image of God.  God wanted communion with man.  He wanted to express love and to receive love in return from man.

And so, He put within man the ability to express emotions – laugher, sorrow, happiness, joy, and of course love.

And mankind still didn’t get it.

~God offered the eternal.  Man wanted the immediate.
~God offered deep joy.  Man wanted thrills.
~God offered freedom.  Man wanted license.
~God offered communion with Himself.  Man wanted to worship at the shrine of his own mind.
~God offered peace.  Man wanted approval for his wars and fighting.*

Even so, God continued to reach out to mankind with love.  Simple, unadorned love.

When man kept rejecting His advances, God chose another way.  He gave up the Crown Jewel of Heaven – His son, as a baby in a manger.

Jesus was the bundle of love that God offered.  He dared to take on humanity in the form of a child, with an ultimate plan of redemption for all mankind.  He wanted to end the separation once and for all.

And so, Christ was born.

God’s love was reaching out to us from the manger, from the cries and tiny hands of this baby.

That is what the great God of this universe chose to do.  He became one of us.  What He wanted to say all along was this … “I REALLY LOVE YOU.”

Christmas is a lot of things.
Beautiful lights
Lovely decorations
Gifts given and received
Gathering times for family and those we cherish
Activities galore, stage plays, musicals, concerts
Music to take your breath away
Food in excess

But the overriding aspect we must grasp … Christmas is a great love story.

And that love reaches all the way to where you and I are living.

It is for us!  FOR US!

Unto us a Child is born.
Unto us a Son is given!
