Recently,
there was an explosion in town near where I live. A book exploded and blew a man’s mind wide
open. It was a beautiful sight.
What
a headline! And it happened just as I
stated.
This
bomb-of-a-book had been on Larry’s bookshelf for three years. He and his wife had moved it around a time or
two, dusted the shelf where it rested, even picked it up a couple of times with
no hint of danger.
As
Larry tells it, his internet went out, and his TV service too, so he picked up
this book – and it literally exploded in his heart and mind as he began
reading.
As
he read, something grabbed him. He got
into the book and before Larry realized it, he was on chapter thirty. He found himself caught in a whirlwind of
hope and encouragement. He was having a
God moment. He couldn’t put the book
down.
The
book – the title doesn’t really matter.
It could happen with any book on any shelf.
Isn’t
that the way life works sometimes? We
can read a particular passage of scripture a dozen times, and on the thirteenth
time we connect. The words leap out,
explode as it were in our minds, and we are changed.
An
explosion like this has happened to me many times. Two of those explosions was Brennan Manning’s
The Ragamuffin Gospel and The Furious Longing of God.
And
there are dozens of scripture texts that have exploded in my mind and yours.
John
3:16 – For God so loved the world that
He gave His one and only son, so that all who believe in Him should not perish
but have eternal life.
Philippians
4:6-7 – Don’t worry about anything,
instead, with prayer and thanksgiving, pray about everything. And God’s peace, which is beyond
understanding, will flood your heart and mind.
I
Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on
Him, for He cares for you.
Psalm 51 is a long passage, and I have turned to it time and again. It has exploded in my heart many times, and I
offer it to you as well.
And
now … find your own words, passages, books and thoughts that expand your mind
and heart. Let them do the work of
enlargement in your life.
An
explosion can be good for a person.
